Reprinted by the John Charnley Trust, the original text having been out of print for many years, this beautifully presented book deals very simply and scientifically with most of the difficult fractures an orthopaedic surgeon is likely to meet in his/her practice. Despite the fact that the original text was published in 1950, the basic principles espoused in the book still apply today, and it remains one of the most concise and complete books on closed fracture treatment ever written. This core textbook has been basic reference for orthopaedic surgeons for half a century. It describes the elementary mechanics of reduction and immobilisation and shows how the commonest injuries can be managed by proven methods based on these general principles. It is a must for anyone embarking on a career in orthopaedics and is a classic text that all orthopaedic trainees and consultants should have on their shelves.![]()

Ellen Charnley is a Chartered Accountant and avid Triathlete. Ellen has completed many triathlons both locally and internationally. Born in England, she and her husband, Don, have lived in London, Bermuda, San Francisco and Hawaii. They now reside in Las Vegas with their dog, Dude.
Training and competing in an Ironman triathlon is not for the faint hearted. Completing an Ironman has been a dream of mine for many years and 2010 was going to be the year I attempted this grueling event. 2.4 miles of swimming followed by 112 miles of biking before finishing with a marathon - 26.2 miles. I signed up for Ironman Arizona in November of 2009, exactly a year in advance. Little did I know at the time that I had been born with a congenital heart defect. For 41 years, I had been living, training and competing in triathlons with a dysfunctional heart that was slowly failing. This is a story about my journey from diagnosis, open heart surgery and recovery to the decision to train and race in an Ironman triathlon, all within eight months.
This book is an inspirational must read for anyone facing surgery or attempting an Ironman.![]()

Bidú Sayão's silvery, impeccably tuned voice was small in size, but rich in nuance, shading, and emotion. Her recording of the Villa-Lobos Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 is justly famous, unmatched for lightness and sensuality. Few have dashed off the Jewel Song from Faust with similar insouciance or imbued the last phrases of Manon's "Adieu , notre petite table" as touchingly as Sayão does here. Her French song interpretations glow with charm and style, and a previously unreleased snippet from Ravel's L'enfant et les sotilèges makes one regret she never recorded the entire role, Sony's transfers are more lifelike and three dimensional than previous issues. A delectable disc. --Jed Distler ![]()
